SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural development. It’s a key part of a child’s education that helps them grow into well-rounded individuals.

Spiritual: Encourages children to explore beliefs, feelings, and values, helping them develop a sense of awe, wonder, and curiosity about the world around them.

Moral: Helps children understand right from wrong, make good choices, and develop a strong sense of fairness and justice.

Social: Focuses on building good relationships, teamwork, and respecting others in different communities and settings.

Cultural: Teaches children to appreciate their own culture and respect the diversity of others, understanding traditions, beliefs, and cultural practices. In short, SMSC helps children grow emotionally and socially, teaching them values that prepare them for life in a diverse, modern society.

SMSC and British Values Guidance

British Values

Understanding British Values is crucial for fostering a sense of belonging, respect, and social cohesion. These values provide a moral framework that helps our children understand their rights and responsibilities within society, promoting a more harmonious and inclusive environment.

For children, who may face social, economic, or emotional challenges, learning these values can be particularly impactful. It offers them a structured sense of security and fairness, encouraging them to develop self-confidence and resilience. British Values also help to combat discrimination and prejudice, fostering empathy and understanding across different cultural and social backgrounds, which are ever growing in our school and community..

By embedding these principles into everyday learning, we not only help our students navigate the complexities of modern British society but also empower them to make positive contributions to our community. By instilling values such as respect, tolerance, and democracy from an early age, our school helps equip children with the tools they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

We ensure British Values are revisited every term with examples that relate to our children. The British Values are prominent around the school to remind children everyday.

“The school teaches the importance of fundamental British values through assemblies and personal, social and health education. Pupils are confident to challenge all forms of discrimination. They know why it is wrong to discriminate based on gender, race or disability. All of this prepares pupils well for life beyond primary school.” Ofsted inspection December 2023

“There is a strong culture of respect which permeates throughout the school.” Review September 2024

“Pupils feel safe in school and have a strong understanding of protected characteristics as they could link them to life in modern Britain".” Review September 2024

Bullying

.

Our children are regularly reminded about bullying. We are a ’bully free school’ where bullying is not tolerated. Children are able to articulate that bullying is Several Times On Purpose

We have worked hard and regularly revisit what the difference is between; being mean, falling out and bullying.
